Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital celebrated "National Wear Red Day" on Feb. 5.
"National Wear Red Day" was established in 2002 by the American Heart Association to deliver an urgent wake-up call to American women about the significance of heart disease among women.
Every female who registered at Northeast on Feb. 5 received a Heart Healthy Chocolate Kiss "specially-made" by members of the Hospital's Patient Access (registration) staff. The Chocolate Kiss included a card that read:
"The Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital Family joins Americans everywhere today by showing our support for women's heart disease awareness during "National Wear Red Day." This Heart healthy Chocolate Kiss is our reminder to you that heart disease is the #1 killer of women. Take action. Control your risk," signed from Northeast's Heart & Vascular Team and the entire Northeast Family."
The first "symbolic" Kiss was presented to Georgia McMannes, the First Lady of Humble, as well as to spouses of the Humble City Council Members during a special "National Wear Red Day" ceremony at the Hospital. Mayor Donnie McMannes read a proclamation which declared February 5 as "National Wear Red for Women Day in Humble."
"Just six weeks ago, we dedicated two beautiful new Cath Labs…the best in the region," said Cardiologist Charlie Gnaim, MD, who emceed the program. "It's comforting to know that we have this kind of sophisticated care right here but wouldn't it be better to do all the heart healthy things so we don't have to face a heart attack?"
That's the purpose behind "National Wear Red Day," to remind women that they can promote their own heart health and prevent disease and illness by taking steps to prevent and control health disease risk factors.
During the brief ceremony, Heath Rushing, service line administrator at Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital, praised Northeast's extraordinary cardiology team and called attention to the fact that two of the Hospital's cardiologists are female.
"We thought it would be especially appropriate during "National Wear Red Day" to honor Dr Marcy Lim and Dr Natasha Iliskovic-Holley with their own kisses," said Rushing who then presented each cardiologist with a their own large, 7-oz. Kiss.
"How many ways can we say it," said Dr Gnaim during the event. "Heart disease is the number one killer of women and one in four American women dies of heart disease. It's time to change that, and we're going to do it one "kiss" at a time."
