This study is determining if de novo darbepoetin alfa, a synthetic form of a hormone that stimulates red blood cell growth, is effective in treating anemia in children with chronic kidney disease. Two groups are being studied: patients who receive dialysis and participants who do not receive dialysis.

A number of factors affect the progression of kidney disease. In this study investigators are determining the risk factors for a decline in kidney function and defining how a progressive decline in kidney function affects neurocognitive function and behavior; risk factors for heart disease; and growth failure and associated disease.
