Preventing the Spread of Infection
Please help us provide a safe environment for everyone who comes to our hospital by following these guidelines:

• Always wash hands before entering and as exiting a child's room. Hands are the primary way infections are passed from one person to another. For convenience, alcohol hand sanitizers are located next to the entrance of each room.
• If you or your other children are sick, please to not visit the hospital. Many childhood infections are contagious and infections can be passed from one person to another just by visiting.
• To prevent the spread of infection, please do not visit other patient's rooms.
• If you or your child has been around anyone with chickenpox within the past three weeks and your or they have not had chickenpox, please do not visit.

Ronald McDonald House
Families of critically ill children can rest and recharge in the home-away-from-home environment of the 14-bedroom Ronald McDonald House located within Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. A true collaboration between the hospital and Ronald McDonald House of Houston, the House includes seven rooms that serve the Pediatric ICU and seven more that serve the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Ronald McDonald House of Houston furnished and decorated the rooms to create a comfortable environment that includes Internet service, refreshments, books, games and other services. The House also has two large family living rooms, laundry facilities and a kitchenette. Each sleep/nap room with adjacent bath is designed to give parents a place to rest or spend the night. Bedrooms are available from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on a first come, first served basis by checking in at Ronald McDonald House office located on the 7th floor of the Hermann Pavilion. Overnight rooms are available from 7:00 pm to 11:00 am and are assigned by your child’s nurse.

Staying in Touch
Whether you are in the hospital, at work or at home, your child’s nurse is available to talk with you. For your child’s protection, you will be assigned a security code when he is admitted to the hospital. We give detailed information on your child’s medical condition and progress over the phone only to parents or guardians. All others will be given a one-word condition (good, fair, serious or critical) statement only, unless you request that no information be provided to others. You may also request that no information be given to anyone other than yourself. Ask your nurse about this.

Visiting Hours and Guidelines
We encourage you to be with your child as much as possible. To assure the safety and security of our children and families, all visitors are required to sign in. Parents and guardians should inform the nurse when they are leaving. If you have any questions or concerns regarding visiting policies, please ask a clinical manager or the charge nurse for assistance. If you would prefer to restrict visitors to your child’s room, please talk to your nurse.

Staying Overnight
Although general visiting hours end at 9 p.m., one or both parents or a relative over the age of 18 may spend the night in the child’s room in the Children’s Center, Children’s Special Care or Roger & Debbie Clemens Pediatric Wing. Upon request, linens are provided for you. For your convenience, you may use the phone, television and bathroom in your child’s room.

In the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), parents and guardians are welcome to stay overnight with their child. One adult may sleep in the patient room on the window seat sofa. Additional respite is available through the Ronald McDonald House.
